In this lecture, I willdelve into the intricate relationship between foreignization and domesticationin translation, specifically in the context of translating Chinese literatureand cultural narratives into English. The aim of this session is to provide youwith practical insights on how foreignization, as a translation strategy, caneffectively boost cultural confidence and convey the depth of Chinese cultureto a global audience.
Our journey will commencewith a clear definition of foreignization and domestication, their theoreticalunderpinnings, and real-world implications. Through a series of engaging casestudies and examples, we will collectively explore how foreignization canpreserve the unique cultural elements and authenticity of Chinese texts, makingthem both accessible and distinct in the target language.
The lecture will alsoaddress the challenges and best practices in balancing foreignization withreadability. We will discuss techniques such as contextualization, the use offootnotes and glossaries, and selective adaptation to ensure that the translatedtexts remain engaging and comprehensible to English-speaking readers.
Additionally, I willhighlight the importance of cultural sensitivity and the translator's role as acultural mediator. By telling the Chinese story through a lens that respectsand celebrates its origins, translators can foster greater cross-cultural understandingand appreciation.
